Wilderness.land

Wilderness.land is a place to get lost on the internet. Made in 2022, it takes the form of a map reminiscent of Pokémon Go, with hundreds of links to websites hidden inside its cells. Behind the landscape is a Google Sheet, a tool usually associated with organising work, counting things, and keeping the world in order.

I like the idea that the same tools built to make us more productive can be used to make us wander. A spreadsheet does not have to be a spreadsheet. It can become a landscape, a playground, or a small wilderness where the next discovery is hidden just beyond the edge of what we can see.

Wilderness is an invitation to explore the web without a destination. To follow a path because it looks interesting, to stumble upon something you didn't know existed, and to remember that the internet is not only a place to search for what we already know we want.

It is also a reminder that we can repurpose the tools made by technological giants to serve our own imaginations and communities, rather than only the purposes for which they were designed.
